Journey Through the Asteroid Belt

July 19, 2025

Listen to this lesson:

Imagine a place in our solar system filled with countless rocks and tiny worlds floating between Mars and Jupiter. This is the Asteroid Belt, a region that's like a cosmic treasure chest full of mysteries. The asteroids here come in all shapes and sizes, from small pebbles to massive rocks as big as a city. Scientists believe they are leftovers from the early solar system that never formed into a planet. Some of these asteroids even have their own moons! Discoveries from spacecraft like NASA's Dawn have taught us about these rocky remnants, revealing secrets about the building blocks of planets. While asteroids zip around, they usually stay far apart, so it's not like in the movies where they are all bunched together. Exploring the Asteroid Belt helps us understand more about the history of our solar system.
Ask Your Kid: If you could visit an asteroid, what kind of experiment would you want to perform there?
