Listen to this lesson:

Imagine the night sky as a giant storybook with stars as its storytellers. For thousands of years, people from different cultures have looked up at the stars and imagined pictures called constellations. Ancient Greeks saw heroes and monsters, while Indigenous Australians saw emus and fish. Each constellation tells a unique story that has been passed down through generations. Today, astronomers use constellations to map the sky and help navigate the vastness of space.

Let's create our own constellation! Start by drawing a simple shape using dots on a piece of paper, and then connect them to form a picture. What story does your constellation tell? Does it represent a mythical creature, a tool, or perhaps a new discovery in the universe? By imagining new constellations, we become part of a tradition that connects us with people from different times and places.

Exploring constellations helps us understand how people from different cultures have viewed the universe. It also inspires us to learn more about the stars beyond our own stories. As we gaze at the night sky, we can imagine all the stories yet to be discovered. So, what stories does the night sky tell you?
Ask Your Kid: Ask Your Kid: If you could name a new constellation, what would it be and why?
