Listen to this lesson:

Imagine being a space gardener! In space, growing plants is a unique adventure because the usual rules of gardening on Earth don't apply. Without gravity, plants don't know which way is up or down. Instead, they rely on light and the way they naturally grow to find their direction. Astronauts use special lights to guide plants, simulating the sun's role on Earth. This setup helps plants understand where to grow leaves and roots, creating a fascinating floating garden above the Earth.

One of the biggest challenges is water. On Earth, water naturally flows down into the soil, reaching the roots of the plants. In space, water forms floating bubbles, so astronauts have devised new ways to deliver water directly to the plant roots using special containers and tools. This helps ensure that the plants can absorb the nutrients they need to thrive.

Through experiments in space, scientists are learning how plants can be a key part of long-term space travel by providing food and oxygen. Each new day brings discoveries about how plants adapt and grow in such a different environment, teaching us more about the wonders of space and life itself.
