Listen to this lesson:

In the vast expanse of space, there's a magnificent light show happening all the time. Have you ever wondered why the universe is so colorful? Stars, galaxies, and nebulae paint the sky with colors ranging from fiery reds to icy blues. Each color tells a story about temperature and the elements present in these celestial objects. For instance, a star's color can reveal its temperature; red stars are cooler while blue ones burn intensely hot.

Beyond stars, nebulas are like space's artistic canvases. These gigantic clouds of gas and dust are where stars are born. The colors in a nebula come from the gases they contain. When these gases absorb energy from nearby stars, they emit light in brilliant colors, creating a cosmic rainbow. Some nebulae, like the Orion Nebula, are visible from Earth and can be seen through a telescope as patches of glowing color.

Did you know that even galaxies have their own color palette? Spiral galaxies, like our Milky Way, often have bright, colorful arms filled with young stars, whereas elliptical galaxies tend to look more yellow due to older stars. This vibrant diversity makes the universe a fascinating place to explore and learn about.
Ask Your Kid: Ask Your Kid: If you could paint your own galaxy, what colors would you choose and why?
