The Mighty Moons of Jupiter

July 19, 2025

Listen to this lesson:

Did you know that Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, has a parade of moons dancing around it? It's like a mini solar system of its own! Among the 79 known moons, four of them are called the Galilean moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. Named after Galileo Galilei, who discovered them in 1610, these moons are fascinating worlds. Io is the most volcanic place in the solar system with hundreds of active volcanoes. Europa is covered with ice, and scientists believe there might be an ocean beneath it. Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system, even bigger than the planet Mercury! Callisto, with its ancient, cratered surface, is like a history book of the solar system.
Ask Your Kid: If you could explore one of Jupiter's moons, which one would it be and why?
